We Support You, so You can keep Protecting Others
As a First Responder, you’ve endured more than most people can imagine.
You arrive at scenes of accidents, violent crimes, and natural disasters where you witness death and serious injuries—and you jump into action, helping and rescuing others while putting yourself in harm’s way.
You’ve responded to incidents involving children who are victims of abuse or tragic accidents, and it has left a lasting emotional imprint on you.
You’re first on the scene after a suicide where the hopelessness of one person—a father, a mother, a son or daughter—becomes a lifetime of grief for their family.
If the weight of these experiences is negatively impacting your work, daily life, or family relationships, then it’s time to call for backup.
“WHAT IF I CAN’T HOLD IT TOGETHER AT WORK THIS WEEK? WHAT IF I LOSE IT?”
For First Responders, having prolonged exposure to high-stress situations is just another day on the job. Repeatedly responding to emergencies, working long shifts, and dealing with life-and-death situations is what you signed up for. It’s what you trained for. You’ve even said it’s what you live for. But no training regimen, no class time, no lessons from the chief, can really prepare you when a rescue attempt fails, or a victim dies despite your best efforts.
The feelings of guilt, helplessness, and frustration can be unbearable when you’re punched in the gut with the truth that you can’t save everyone, every time, in every situation. But that doesn’t change the fact that you’re going to keep trying. And you might blame yourself when it goes awry.
If you’re determined to keep saving everyone, don’t neglect saving yourself too. But here’s the humble secret: Saving yourself requires help from others.
Let’s call it teamwork.
Teamwork is not a weakness—it’s a strength. You know a team is only as strong as its weakest link, so everyone needs to be healthy and function at their best. A team helps each other improve, so they can succeed together.
Who is on your personal team? Who do you call for backup when you feel overwhelmed and irritable and fear you’re losing control?
The weight of all those experiences in the line of duty—marked by trauma, anxiety, loss of control—cannot be carried alone. First Responders can’t just heal themselves. Sometimes they need a medic too. And they need to call for personal backup.
So they can be focused, steady, and make snap decisions without feeling like they are in a slow motion dream.
So the boss makes comments of how well they are doing out there, instead of asking…”Hey are you ok?”
“I WANT TO KEEP BEING THE STRONG ONE, BUT I’M SO TIRED OF CARRYING THIS BURDEN ALONE.”
So Much Is at Stake
You dedicate your life to protecting others, yet your own mental health often gets pushed aside. Your inability to “turn off” work mode, always feeling on edge, the loss of focus—you know it’s changing you. You feel disconnected from life and emotionally distant from the people you love the most. The constant vigilance, flashbacks, and even nightmares are taking a toll on your well-being, your relationships, and your ability to enjoy life.
You find yourself thinking, “I have to keep the trust of my team, but I’m scared they’ll see how broken I really am. I just want to be the strongest link! That’s normally me!”
And what will happen if you can’t stay focused on the job? You know there’s much more at stake than a paycheck—that’s never been your motivation anyways.
It’s not worth endangering your team because you’re secretly struggling inside. You don’t want to jeopardize critical rescue efforts by not being at your peak performance. When your self-doubt, low energy, or perceived weaknesses interfere with your team’s ability to save a life—it’s just not worth the risk.
“I SHOULD BE ABLE TO HANDLE THIS ON MY OWN—I’M SUPPOSED TO BE STRONG.”
Let’s be honest: You are strong. And courageous and committed and heroic in the line of duty too. But you’re not invincible. No one is. No one expects you to be a Greek god or their savior in all things. And if anyone has made you believe otherwise, then they were wrong.
Being strong doesn’t always mean you just need to toughen up and push through. Sometimes the strongest and most courageous act is to admit we all have human limitations and get some help with carrying our burdens. Sometimes the smartest choice and the right choice in a time of crisis is to call for additional resources and support. Because ignoring the extent of our problems doesn’t make them go away. It just makes them worse. And that’s negligent behavior.
Even heroes sometimes need help on the front lines.
You’ve always been someone who others can depend on in times of crisis. Some people have even called you a hero. But now, it’s time to focus on you.
You want to keep being the strong one, but you’re exhausted from carrying your burdens alone. You want to keep the trust of your team, but you fear they will reject you when they see how broken you really are. You want to enjoy some down time with your family, but you can never wind down inside.
Take courage—move past the shame that’s keeping you silent—and call for some personal backup.
It’s time to Dispatch some Support for You
At the Laetare Group PLLC we understand the unique challenges you face as a First Responder. You’ve experienced trauma that most people will never know, and it’s time to prioritize your mental health and personal well-being.
Through Trauma-Informed Counseling and EMDR Therapy (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), we can help you:
- process the memories that won’t leave you alone,
- restore your inner calmness and confidence,
- reconnect emotionally with your loved ones,
- and regain your focus in daily life and at work…
…so you can keep helping others without feeling like you’re dying inside.
Your team and your loved ones want you to be healthy. They need you to be healthy. After all, a drowning person can’t save others.
People genuinely care about your well-being. And so should you.
A Focus on Healing and Wholeness
Imagine being able to sleep through the night without your mind racing or wake up without the dread of facing another day. Wouldn’t it be great to enjoy the quiet of morning without the usual rush of anxiety?
Imagine being at work and feeling calm under pressure. Your mind is clear and focused, you have confidence in your decisions, and you have no doubt that your team can count on you when it matters most. Do you want to stop being harassed by the past and believe in yourself again?
Picture yourself feeling rested and ready to enjoy a day off with your family. Free from the constant worry that usually plagues your mind, you embrace greater peace and start being mentally and emotionally present with the people whose love you have always appreciated most. Are you ready to enjoy the little moments at home again–sharing a good belly laugh, reading a book to a child, a long conversation with someone you love?
There IS a path to healing and wholeness, and we’re here to guide you every step of the way.
A PROVEN PATH TO HEALING
Our combination of Trauma-Informed Counseling and EMDR Therapy allows us to meet the unique needs of each First Responder we work with. We will address your symptoms of trauma while also focusing on restoring your overall well-being. By working with us, you can experience these transformations:
- Being overwhelmed by thoughts, memories, and confusion in day to day life is replaced with understanding the root of feeling triggered.
- Move from feeling a loss of control by triggers to having a new set of coping skills with the ability to change your emotional state from overwhelm to calm. You can tolerate and effectively manage how unexpected triggers impact you.
- Instead of fearing conversations about past incidents you will have the ability to gain insight, acceptance, and resolution of the past.
- Experiencing emotional and physical disturbance when remembering the past is replaced with feeling neutral, objective, or increased tolerance of previously disturbing memories.
- Self-defeating beliefs, along with irrational guilt and shame, are exposed as the lies that they are as you uncover truer and empowering beliefs about yourself.
- Transition from a state of high-alert and stress to finding peace and relaxation in your daily life so you can actually enjoy your days off.
- Regain confidence in your ability to perform your duties–both personal and professional–without the constant shadow of past events hanging over you.
- As you settle down and worry less, you’re able to reconnect with your loved ones and rebuild relationships that have been strained by the impact of your work.
Stop letting trauma dictate your life. It’s time to take back control and live the life you deserve.
